Vagabonds Trio Takes First Place

at Bugler's Hall of Fame North American Competition

Dateline: Bridgeport, Conn., April 24, 2010

The bugler trio of South Jersey's only Alumni Style Drum and Bugle Corps, the South Jersey Vagabonds of Magnolia, took FIRST PLACE  in head-to-head competition with the nation's best at the Bugler's Hall of Fame North American Championships here today.

Taking top honors with their performance of A Bugler's Holiday, the trio earned a score of 89 points, besting their closest competitors by a full three points. The award winning trio, with Ef Deal on First Soprano, Jack Deal on Second Soprano, and Shane Beatrice on Third Soprano, double-tongued their way through the piece in just over three minutes.

The rush of snare drums and the thrill of "Drum & Bugle Corps" style music will be filling the summer air this year like it hasn't for a long time. Our part in making this magic music happen includes appearing in parades and concert venues around the region along with a regular schedule of rehearsals to hone our sound and further develop our spirit.

Regular rehearsals and a dedication to reviving the award-winning reputation of the original Vagabonds are paying off these days in a big way. The Vagabonds won Second Place at the Bugler's Hall of Fame Regional Competition in Garfield, NJ, in February this year. Personal participation in a competitive venue has a way of sharpening the drive to excellence, thus we expect an even higher point talley when we return to Garfield in February, 2011. If you're of a mind to join our march to higher levels of performance and acclaim, we'll all be pleased to "shove over some" and welcome your presence and talent to our ranks.

Visitors are always welcome at our rehearsals. If you have a horn, oil up the valves and bring it! If you don't have a horn, c'mon anyway! If you'd like more info, please feel free to send email to Info@SJVagabonds.org

Along with a rising awareness that the Vagabonds Drum and Bugle Corps of Southern New Jersey is back on the scene, we're being asked to appear more frequently and in a wider variety of events than ever before. Send email to Scheduling@SJVagabonds.org to secure this award winning organization for your event this summer.

Here's what we're preparing for the summer of 2011:

Most alumni corps play music from their past, and the Vagabonds are no exception! This year our theme will be "Remembering", and we'll be performing music that our corps were known for in past decades. Some of our members played it then, and we're thrilled that they'll be playing it again for you this year.

Some of the original music we'll be sharing with you over the course of 2011 comes directly from original scores preserved from the hey-day of the Vagabonds, the 1960s and 1970s. Where original scores are no longer available, pieces have been "retro-arranged", working from careful study of original audio and video recordings. With direction in the performance style and the unique sound of "Drum Corps" showmanship by some who's own sound is part of those original recordings, the "new folks" are learning quickly, and the performance sound is becoming very close to that of the original. Us 'veterans' are getting more "shivers" with every passing week as we hear the "Vagabonds Sound" developing, and the 'newbys' are beginning to smile a lot more as they discover the thrill of the sound and the energy of the "Vagabonds Performance" we remember and learned to love so many years ago.

As you listen and remember the sounds of performances of years gone by, you'll recognise music from the original Vagabonds as well as other corps of the era: Blue Rock, Bon Bons, Rough Riders, and more. Memories are always best when they're shared with others who were there, and it's been extremely enjoyable for us to get out this "old" music and play these pieces once again. It's going to be fun performing them throughout 2011, and we hope you'll be able to join us here and there around the Delaware Valley to enjoy them again with us. Keep an eye on our "Schedule of Events" page for details.

The music is great, the people are great, and the Vagabonds Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps is turning out to be "A GREAT LITTLE CORPS!".

Please consider this YOUR invitation you to come and help us become

"A GREAT BIG CORPS"

"We do it for the love of the activity."
